CIV172   Introduction to Sustainability and Environmental Engineering   (10 credits)

Year Running: 2015/2016
Credit level: F4

Description

This module presents the drivers for global environmental change 2050 a project human population approaching 10 billion with over 75% concentrated in urban and megacity areas, a doubling in demand for food and fuel, and more than 50% increase in demand for clean water, and a quadrupling in the global economy - all whilst mitigating and adapting to climate change. Engineering solutions to clean water and sustainable use of soil and land, and energy supply must navigate this complex and rapidly changing set of conflicting social goals. Concepts and introductory analysis methods for designing sustainable solutions are developed and illustrated through specific areas of civil engineering application: water and energy supply, soil protection and restoration, and remediation of industrial pollution.
